Welcome to CRB @ QLS

What Is CRB?

Community Reading Buddies (CRB) is a non-profit organization founded in 1994 dedicated to closing the literacy gap in low-income elementary students.  Nearly 2/3 of the kindergarteners in Title 1 schools are behind the national reading standard. After the impact of COVID, nearly 250,000 Bay Area Kindergarten to 3rd graders are now behind their grade levels in literacy. If they do not reach grade level by the end of 3rd grade, they are four times less likely to graduate high school.

CRB @ QLS: Mission

The Quarry Lane chapter of the Community Reading Buddies program is open for anyone in grades 9-12 to join! Joining the team will help you grow as a leader and a person, getting to work first-hand with elementary school students from low income backgrounds. Your contribution of volunteer hours will help to reduce the literacy gap in the Bay Area. Our club's goal is to mentor young children and help them grow their reading skills, as well as raise money to provide school supplies and books to Title 1 schools in the Bay Area. The program is always looking for new mentors, so any time is a good time to sign up!

Why Join Us?

Community Reading Buddies is the most cost-effective program in the Bay Area. While it takes nearly $1,500 per student for other programs, CRB uses the same amount for five, at only $300 per student. Additionally, it has been proven that our buddies are able to make nearly 4 months of literacy progress in half the time. Our mentors are equipped with BookNook, an award-winning digital literacy platform to teach our young readers through fun activities and 1-on-1 reading.

Our Impact

CRB @ QLS Club will coordinate mentorship training, help with scheduling online and in-person training slots, participate in summer reading events, and organize book drives and fundraisers to help achieve the larger goal of the CRB program.

How do you benefit?

Being students in Dublin, California, we take many privileges for granted that are not available to elementary school kids in Title 1 schools all across the Bay Area. There is deep satisfaction in doing our small part to help bridge the literacy gap by volunteering our time.

The time itself that you spend with CRB @ QLS, is eligible for earning volunteer hours for sessions you do with elementary students. There are two to three programs every year, and you can earn up to 24 volunteer hours per program.
